About the Author

Olly Richards speaks eight languages and is the man behind the popular blog: I Will Teach You A Language. He started learning his first foreign language at age 19, when he bought a one-way ticket to Paris...

Richard Simcott was born in The United Kingdom. He was named one of the UK's most multilingual people by Harper-Collins and became Goethe Institute's "Ambassador for Multilingualism". Richard is a graduate in Combined Languages (French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese) in the UK and former member of the British Diplomatic Service, having served in the UK and at British Embassies abroad. He has appeared in a number of world media outlets for his work in the language community and skills as a polyglot. He started the Polyglot Conference in 2013 in Budapest and has taken the event to Novi Sad (2014), New York City (2015), Thessaloniki (2016), Reykjavik (2017), Ljubljana (2018) and Fukuoka (2019) bringing together people interested in languages and experts in a wide range of fields. He speaks French at home with his daughter and she is his inspiration for the release of "French Short Stories for Beginners". He also speaks Spanish, German and Macedonian at home with his family and uses around 25 languages regularly throughout the year for work and travel. Currently he works as Language Director at The Social Element and Polpeo.
Richard is currently working on new book projects. Release dates to follow later this year.

This book is truly for beginners leaning towards intermediate! i’m heading into my second year of French (college level) for reference. I would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about learning the language in a chill way, especially if you’re a pleasure reader.
Also it doesn’t hurt that it’s a compact sized book that can taken on the go!
(i gave it 4 stars since i haven’t completed it - but it’s defo a 5star resource)

I've been studying French for over a year using apps, and I wanted to progress into reading rather than just memorizing grammar and vocabulary. This book was perfect! The stories are broken into short chapters, and there are bolded vocabulary words that are translated after the chapter; however, no complete English translation is provided anywhere in the book. Even the reading comprehension quizzes, which appear after each chapter, are entirely in French. The English introduction explains that part of learning to read in a foreign language is just like learning to read in your native language -- you need to read what you can, and then you'll learn new words through the context of the story. This means you won't understand every word.

Overall the book was at a perfect level for me, but I have been studying the basics for awhile. I would recommend this for high-beginners to intermediate. It would probably be too hard if you're just starting out, because many of the stories have fantasy elements too, which adds to the complexity when reading. I plan to buy the Intermediate volume after I spend some more time re-reading these stories.

A natural way to acquire French

I've been slowly going through these stories for the past two months -- along with additional exposure to the language -- and I find the storytelling method the best way for me to acquire French vocabulary and have a sense of grammar. The stories themselves are interesting, if sometimes a little weird. There are fairy tales, science fiction, mysteries, etc. The level of reading is probably advanced beginner, so you should have a smattering of basic French vocabulary before you undertake reading this. My method for reading is as the book suggests: read a paragraph or two and usually I miss several words, which I'll either pick up through repeated reading and therefore context, or if I can't figure it out I'll write it down to look up later. Because I'm also concentrating on being able to understand spoken French (which as I've recently learned, is different than written French), I also downloaded the Audible version and I listen to that and read along. Sometimes I just listen to those stories in the car, after I've read and become familiar with the text -- and my mind just goes along following the story that I'm listening to because I've already read it a few times. I'm taking my time to go through the stories in this book and re-read each one until I have the vocab and listening down, and it has been one of the best exercises in acquiring French.

Having the paperback book makes it easier to follow along with the audio. This way I work on my reading, learn the spelling, improve my comprehension, and my pronunciation.

In my opinion for beginners, the book can be accompanied by an audio version whether it's the digital file or the audiobook from Audible but you'll pay for the book plus the monthly fee to keep your account opened.

My only concern with the digital file download is that sometimes it's problematic. Not that I've experienced it but I already have the audiobook version on Audible.

If for some reason the file doesn't work there's the audible version of the book. but that should your very very last resort because of the monthly fee depending on your monthly plan.
